Abattoir Gallery in the Hildebrandt Building is opening a new show featuring three artists who will be largely unfamiliar to local art lovers, because all three are based in New York City. The artists in Calibration: Kathryn Kerr, Cameron Martin, and Nadir Souirgi have never shown together before, but the gallery says they share some points of reference.
They say that each is “intent upon expanding the parameters of contemporary painting through distinct vocabularies, technologies, and methods of production…the artists participate in the evolution of a new category of painted image, one that resists easy linguistic capture. Visually compelling, formally rigorous, and intellectually centered, the work attempts to dismantle outdated binaries such as abstraction/representation, figure/ground and subject/object, and proposes that the expanded field of painting is vibrant and full of potential for critical engagement.”
The show opens with a reception on Saturday November 15 where Martin and Souirgi will be in attendance and present at artist talk at 5pm. It will be on view through January 31, 2026.
